There’s something about camouflage cargos, big silver hoops and black high-tops that brings the noughties straight back. Suddenly you’re remembering carefully curated playlists and the perfume bottle that had pride of place on your dressing table. This plus size Y2K outfit takes that familiar feeling and brings it into an ordinary afternoon: coffee with a friend, a proper catch-up and absolutely no rush to leave.
The camouflage cargo trousers set the mood. Their loose shape and earthy green print give the outfit that relaxed, slightly rebellious feel, without needing much else around them. They’re the sort of statement piece you can build a casual outfit around, rather than feeling you need to keep adding things to make it interesting.
Here, the black off-shoulder top keeps the combination simple. The neckline adds a softer detail against the cargo pockets, while the long sleeves and loose silhouette carry on the easygoing feel. You could wear it falling naturally over the waistband, as shown, rather than arranging yourself around a perfectly tucked-in top every time you sit down.
Black also works beautifully with the olive tones in the camouflage. It gives the print room to stand out and connects the top with the trainers, so the whole outfit feels considered without looking overly coordinated. Sometimes the simplest colour choice is the one that makes everything else click.
The black high-tops are a natural fit for this look. Their white laces and toe caps break up the darker colours, and that familiar canvas shape feels right at home beneath baggy cargos. This is very much a trainers-and-cappuccino outfit, with the possibility of a wander around the shops afterwards.
Then come the silver hoops. A little shine near the face is enough here; there’s already plenty happening in the trousers. They bring that recognisable Y2K touch without needing a whole collection of accessories.
The bright pink perfume bottle and silver music player finish the mood board with a proper dose of nostalgia. The perfume adds a cheerful burst of colour, while the player brings back the pleasure of having your favourite songs in one little device. A soundtrack for the journey to the café feels entirely appropriate.
What I like about this outfit is that it leaves room to enjoy the clothes. Plus size style can include a bold print, a bare shoulder and a trend you remember from the first time around. You can choose the bits you still love and wear them in a way that suits you now.
Cargos on, hoops in, coffee ordered. We’ve got plenty to catch up on.
